किहि विधि कर कान्हहीं समझेहुं ॥ मैंही भूली चंद दिखरायो ताहि कहत मोहि दे मैं खेहुं ॥१॥ अनहोंती कहूं भई कन्हैया देखी सुनी न बात । यहतो आय खिलोना सबको खान कहत है तात ॥२॥ यह देत लोनी नित मोकों छिनछिन सांझसंवारे ॥ बारबार तुम माखन मांगत देहुं कहातें प्यारे ॥३॥ देखत रहो खिलोना चंदा ओर न करहु कन्हाई ॥ सूरस्याम लिये हँसत यशोदानंदहुं कहत बुझाई ॥४॥

किहि विधि कर कान्हहीं समझेहुं ॥ मैंही भूली चंद दिखरायो ताहि कहत मोहि दे मैं खेहुं ॥१॥
“How shall I make Kanhaiya understand? It was my own mistake to show Him the moon. Now He keeps saying, ‘Give me the moon! I want to eat it!’” ॥१॥

अनहोंती कहूं भई कन्हैया देखी सुनी न बात । यहतो आय खिलोना सबको खान कहत है तात ॥२॥
“Kanhaiya, what a strange thing You are asking! I have never seen or heard of anything like this. My darling, the moon is something for everyone to look at and enjoy, but You are asking to eat it!” ॥२॥

यह देत लोनी नित मोकों छिनछिन सांझसंवारे ॥ बारबार तुम माखन मांगत देहुं कहातें प्यारे ॥३॥
“This moon gives me fresh butter every day, again and again, morning and evening. If You eat the moon, then when You ask me for butter, my darling, where shall I get it from to give You?” ॥३॥

देखत रहो खिलोना चंदा ओर न करहु कन्हाई ॥ सूरस्याम लिये हँसत यशोदानंदहुं कहत बुझाई ॥४॥
“Just look at the moon and enjoy it as a toy, Kanhaiya. Do not be stubborn anymore.” Surdas says that Mother Yashoda holds Shyam lovingly, smiling as she speaks to Nanda Maharaj and tries to make Kanhaiya understand. ॥४॥
