MEANING
चढयो सुरराज व्रजराजके कुंवर पर घेर घन कटक आगें चलायो ॥घरहरत भूमिपर धाक त्रैलोकमें झूंम व्रजदेशपर दोर आयो ॥१॥Suraraj advanced against Vrajaraj’s Kunvar, sending an army of massed clouds before him. Thundering over the earth and spreading terror through the three worlds, they surged forward and rushed upon the land of Vraj. ॥१॥भवनतें चलत सब सुनत प्रतिज्ञा करी सुरनको नाथ तबही कहाऊं ॥प्रलय करूं देश गजराजके पगनतें गोप नंदादि सब बांध लाऊं ॥२॥As he left his abode, he made a vow for all to hear: “Only then shall I be called the lord of the devas, when I have brought destruction upon this land, trampled it beneath my elephant’s feet, and bound Nanda and all the Gopas and brought them before me.” ॥२॥भरे जल थल विपुल कारे बादर उमग मानो मद मत्त हाथी उमायो ॥तोर चकचूर पर अंकुश लियें पवन फिरबान चंचल चलायो ॥३॥Vast black clouds, heavy with water, surged forward like a herd of intoxicated elephants. The restless wind drove them swiftly onward, like a mahout wielding his goad. ॥३॥दुंदुभी घोर हथनाल जंबुकसर चांप मानो वसन बाण उडायो ॥रबकत झबकत बीज लपलप करें चपल मानो जीभ सांपिन चलायो ॥४॥The terrible thunder sounded like war drums and great weapons, while the rushing storm seemed to send arrows flying through the sky. Lightning flashed and flickered again and again, like the darting tongues of serpents. ॥४॥अतिही प्रचंड जलमंड गजसूंडसी थंभसी बूंद जब परन लागी ॥अकुलात कंपती नव बाल बछरालियें हलमली धेनु सब फिरत भागी ॥५॥Then fierce torrents of water began to fall like great columns poured from elephants’ trunks. The young calves trembled in distress, and the frightened cows became restless and ran about in every direction. ॥५॥होत खरभर नगर बगर घर घरन व्रज जीव जल थल सकल कलमलाए ॥भीति भईं नारि मंदिर रही डोलत फिरें पलना तें पूत छाती लगाए ॥६॥Confusion spread through the settlement, the pastures, and every home; all the creatures of Vraj, on land and amid the rising water, were distressed. The women, overcome with fear, moved anxiously through their homes, taking their children from the cradles and holding them tightly to their chests. ॥६॥सिमिट चहुं ओरतें गोप गोपी सबे आय गोविंदपे रोय दीनो ॥मुसक मृगराज ज्यों कुंवर व्रजराजके भूमिते उचक गिरिराज लीनो ॥७॥Gathering from every side, all the Gopas and Gopis came to Govind and cried before Him in helplessness. Smiling like a fearless lion, Vrajaraj’s Kunvar lifted Giriraj up from the earth. ॥७॥मार मद भुजनसों राख व्रज आपनो टोक सुरराज सुर पुर पठायो ॥सूर किशोर प्रभु सबनके देखतें साँवरों कुंवर घर जीत आयो ॥८॥With the strength of His arms He broke Suraraj’s pride, protected His Vraj, and sent the lord of the devas back to his celestial realm. Sur says: before everyone’s eyes, the dark-hued Kishor Prabhu returned home victorious. ॥८॥
