Meaning
तुम नंदमेहेरके लाल मोहन जान दै ॥ रानी जसुमति प्रान आधार ॥ मोहन जान दै ॥धृ.॥ “You are the Lala of Nandameher, Mohan, let me go! You are Queen Jasumati’s very life. Mohan, let me go!” ॥धृ.॥
श्रीगोवर्धनकी शिखरतें मोहन दीनी टेरा॥ अंतरंगसों कहत हैं सब ग्वालिनि राखौ घेर ॥ नागरि दान दै ॥१॥
From the summit of Shri Govardhan, Mohan calls out. He says to His intimate companions, “All of you surround this Gwalini and keep her here. O Nagari, give Me My daan.” ॥१॥
ग्वालिन रोकी ना रहें ग्वाल रहे पचहार ॥ अहो गिरिधारी दौरियो सो कह्यौ न मानत ग्वार ॥२॥
The Gwalini will not stay when the Gopas try to stop her; they are left pleading with her. “O Giridhari, run after her! This Gwari will not listen to what we say.” ॥२॥
चली जात गोरस मदमाती मानों सुनत नहीं कान ॥ दौरि आये मनभामते सो रोकी अंचलतान ॥३॥
Intoxicated with the joy of carrying her goras, she keeps walking as though her ears hear nothing. The One who delights her heart comes running and stops her by taking hold of her anchal. ॥३॥
एक भुजा कंकन गहैं एक भुजा गहि चीर ॥ दान लैन ठाढ़े भये गहबर कुंज कुटीर ॥४॥
With one hand He takes hold of her bracelet, and with the other He grasps her garment. He stands there to collect His daan in the bower of Gahvar. ॥४॥
बहुत दिना तुम बचि गई हो दान हमारौ मार ॥ आज हों लैहों आपनौ दिन दिनकौ दान सँभार॥५॥
“For many days you have escaped without paying My daan. Today I shall take what is Mine—reckon up the daan due for each day.” ॥५॥
रसनिधान नवनागरी निरख बचन मृदु बोल ॥ क्यों मुरि ठाढ़ी होत है घूँघटपट मुखखोल ॥६॥
The treasury of rasa gazes upon Navanagari and speaks gentle words: “Why do you turn away and stand there? Lift your veil and show your face.” ॥६॥
हरख हियें हरि करखिकें मुखतें नील निचोल ॥ पूरन प्रगट्यौ देखियै मानो चंद घटाकी ओल ॥७॥
With joy in His heart, Hari draws the blue veil away from Her face. Her full face appears, like the full moon emerging from behind a bank of clouds. ॥७॥
ललित बचन समुदित भये नेति नेति यह बैन ॥ उर आनंद अतिही बढ़्यौ सो सुफल भये मिलि नैन ॥८॥
Graceful words arise between Them, beyond all description—“not this, not this” is all that can be said. Great joy swells within Their hearts, and Their eyes become fulfilled as they meet. ॥८॥
यह मारग हम नित गई कबहूँ सुन्यौ नहीं कान ॥ आज नई यह होत है सो माँगत गोरसदान ॥ मोहनजानदै ॥९॥
“I travel this path every day, yet never have my ears heard of this. Today something new has begun—you are demanding a tax on goras. Mohan, let me go!” ॥९॥
तुम नवीन नवनागरी नूतन भूषण अंग॥ नयौ दान हम माँगनौ सो नयौ बन्यौ यह रंग ॥१०॥
“You are a new Navanagari, with new ornaments upon Your limbs. So I ask a new daan from You—and thus this new play has arisen.” ॥१०॥
चंचल नयन निहारियै अति चंचल मृदुबैन ॥ कर नहीं चंचल कीजियै तजि अंचल चंचल नैन ॥११॥
“Look at Your restless eyes and Your exceedingly playful, gentle words.” “Do not let Your hands be restless—release my anchal, O restless-eyed One!” ॥११॥
सुंदरता सब अंगकी बसनन राखी गोय ॥ निरखि निरखि छबि लाड़िली मैरौ मन आकर्षित होय ॥१२॥
“Your garments conceal the beauty of all Your limbs. Gazing again and again upon Your beauty, Ladili, My heart is drawn toward You.” ॥१२॥
लै लकुटी ठाढ़े रहे जानि साँकरीखोर ॥ मुसकि ठगौरी लायकें मोसौं सकत न लई रति जोर ॥१३॥
“You stand there holding Your stick, knowing this to be a narrow passage. Smiling and casting Your beguiling charm upon me, You cannot take love from me by force.” ॥१३॥
नेंक दूरि ठाढ़े रहौ कछू और सकुचाय ॥ कहा कियौ मन भांवते मेरे अंचल पीक लगाय ॥१४॥
“Stand a little farther away and show some modesty. What have You done as it pleased Your heart, staining my anchal with betel?” ॥१४॥
कहा भयौ अंचल लगी पीक हमारी जाय ॥ याके बदलें ग्वालिनी मेरे नयनन पीक लगाय ॥१५॥
“What does it matter if My betel stain has touched your anchal? In return for it, O Gwalini, place the colour of your eyes upon Mine.” ॥१५॥
सूधे बचनन माँगिये लालन गोरस दान ॥ मोंहन भेद जनायकैं सो कहत आनकी आन ॥१६॥
“Lala, ask plainly for the daan on goras. Mohan, You reveal one intention, yet speak of something altogether different.” ॥१६॥
जैसें हम कछु कहत हैं ऐसी तुम कहि लैहु ॥ मनमाने सो कीजिये पर दान हमारौ देहु ॥१७॥
“Just as I say whatever I wish, you too may say what you wish. Do whatever pleases your heart—but give Me My daan.” ॥१७॥
कहा भरें हम जात हैं दान जो माँगत लाल ॥ भई अवार घर जानदै सो छाँड अटपटी चाल ॥१८॥
“What are we carrying that You demand a tax, Lala? It is getting late; let me go home, and give up these strange ways.” ॥१८॥
भरे जातहौ श्रीफल कंचन कमल बसनसों ढाँक ॥ दान जो लागत ताही कौ तुम देकर जाहु निशाँक ॥१९॥
“You are carrying golden coconuts and lotuses concealed beneath your garments. Pay the daan due upon those, and then go on without fear.” ॥१९॥
इतनी विनती मानियै माँगत ओली ओड़ ॥ गोरसकौ रस चाखियै लालन अंचल छोड़ ॥२०॥
“Grant me this one request,” she pleads, drawing her veil around herself. “Lala, taste the sweetness of the goras and release my anchal.” ॥२०॥
संग की सखी सब फिर गई सुनिहै कीरति माय ॥ प्रीति हिये में राखियै सो प्रगट कियें रस जाय ॥२१॥
“All the sakhis who were with me have gone back; Mother Kirti will hear of this. Keep this love within Your heart—for if it is made public, its rasa will be lost.” ॥२१॥
काल्ह बहोरि हम आइ हैं गोरस लै सब ग्वारि ॥ नीकी भाँति चखाइहों मेरे जीवन हों बलिहारि ॥२२॥
“Tomorrow we Gwaris shall come again carrying goras. I shall let You taste it properly, O my life; I offer myself to You.” ॥२२॥
सुनि राधे नवनागरी हम न करें विश्वास ॥ करकौ अमृत छाँडिकैं को करै काल्हि की आस ॥२३॥
“Listen, Radhe Navanagari, I do not trust that promise. Who would let go of nectar already in hand and place his hope in tomorrow?” ॥२३॥
तेरौ गोरस चाखिवै मेरौ मन ललचाय ॥ पूरन शशि कर पायकें चकोरन धीर धराय ॥२४॥
“My heart longs to taste Your goras. Having attained the full moon within reach, how could the chakora remain patient?” ॥२४॥
मोहन कंचन कलशिका लीनी शीश उतार ॥ श्रमकन बदन निहारिकें सो ग्वालिनी अति सुकुमार ॥२५॥
Mohan takes the golden vessel down from Her head. He gazes upon the face of that exceedingly delicate Gwalini, beaded with drops of perspiration. ॥२५॥
नव विंजन गहि लालजु श्रीकर देत दुराय ॥ श्रमित भई चलौ कुंज में नेंक पलोटूँ पाय ॥२६॥
Lalaju takes hold of Her fresh garment with His blessed hand and gently draws Her aside. “You have grown tired; come into the kunj and let Me massage Your feet for a little while.” ॥२६॥
जानत हों यह कौंन है ऐसी ढीठ्य देत ॥ श्रीवृषभान कुमारि हे अरी तोहि बीच को लेत ॥२७॥
“Do You know who She is, that You behave with such boldness? She is Shri Vrishabhan’s Kumari! Ari, who would dare interfere with You?” ॥२७॥
गोरे श्रीनंदरायजू गोरी जसुमति माय ॥ तुम याहीतै साँमरे ऐसे लच्छिन पाय ॥२८॥
“Shri Nandarai is fair, and Mother Jasumati is fair. You are dark because of these very ways of Yours—such are the traits You have acquired!” ॥२८॥
मन मेरौ तारन बसै और अंजन की रेख ॥ चोखी प्रीत हियें बसै याते साँवल भेख ॥२९॥
“My heart dwells in Your eyes and in their line of kajal. Pure love dwells within My heart; that is why My form has become dark.” ॥२९॥
आप चालसो चालियै यहै बड़ेनकी रीत ॥ ऐसी कबहुँ न कीजिये हँसें लोग विपरीत ॥३०॥
“One should conduct oneself according to one’s own station; this is the way of respectable people. Never behave like this, or people will laugh and speak ill of You.” ॥३०॥
ठाले ठूले फिरत हौ और कछू नहिं काम ॥ बाट घाट रोकत फिरौ आन न मानत श्याम ॥३१॥
“You wander about idle, with nothing else to do. You go about blocking roads and pathways, Shyam, paying heed to no one.” ॥३१॥
यही हमारौ राज है ब्रजमंडल सब ठौर ॥ तुम हमारी कुमुदिनी हम कमल बदन के भौंर ॥३२॥
“This is My kingdom—every place throughout Vrajmandal. You are My kumudini, and I am the bee of your lotus-face.” ॥३२॥
ऐसे में कोऊ आइ है देखै अद्भुत रीति ॥ आज सबै नंदलालजू प्रगट होयगी प्रीति ॥३३॥
“If someone comes now and sees this extraordinary play, Nandalalju, today all our love will become known.” ॥३३॥
ब्रज वृंदावन गिरि नदी पशु पंछी सब संग ॥ इनसों कहा दुराइयै प्यारी राधा मेरौ अंग ॥३४॥
“Vraj, Vrindavan, the mountain, the river, the animals and birds—all are with us. Why hide it from them? Pyari Radha is a part of My very being.” ॥३४॥
अंसभुजा धरि लै चले प्यारी चरन निहोर ॥ निरखत लीला रसिकजू जहाँ दान मान की ठौर ॥३५॥
Placing His arm around Pyari’s shoulder, He leads Her onward, lovingly entreating Her at every step. Rasikju beholds this Leela at the place where daan and maan unfold. ॥३५॥
