MEANING
बलिबलि चरित्र गोकुल राय । दावानल को पान कीयौ पीबत दूध सिराय ॥१॥Again and again I offer myself to the wondrous deeds of the Lord of Gokul. He drank up the forest fire, yet while drinking milk He would spill it. ॥१॥पूतना के प्रान शोषे रहै उर लपटाय । कहत जननी दूध डारत खीजत कछुब न खाय ॥२॥He sucked away Putana’s very life while clinging to her; yet when His mother offers Him milk, He becomes upset and will not eat anything. ॥२॥धर्यौ गिरिवर दाहिने कर धरत बाँह पिराय । शकट भंजन धरत कुच युग कठिन लागत पाय ॥३॥He held up Girivar with His right hand, yet His arm aches when He holds something. He shattered the cart, yet when His mother holds Him to her bosom, His feet seem tender and delicate. ॥३॥तृणावर्त आकाशतें पटक्यौ हन्यौ मुष्ट फिराय । डरत ललना झूलत पलना खरे देत झुलाय ॥४॥He hurled Trinavarta down from the sky and killed him with the force of His fist; yet the little child becomes frightened while lying in the cradle, and they stand there rocking Him. ॥४॥बकासुर की चोंच फारी सुदिस दृष्टि दिखाय । कीर पिंजरा देत अँगुरी श्याम लेत भजाय ॥५॥He tore apart Bakasura’s beak and revealed His wondrous power; yet when He puts His finger into a parrot’s cage, Shyam quickly pulls it away and runs. ॥५॥बिना दीपक भवन द्वारें श्याम धरत न पाय। अघासुर मुख पैठि निकस्यो बच्छ बाल छुड़ाय ॥६॥Without a lamp, Shyam will not step through the doorway of the house; yet He entered Aghasura’s mouth and came out again, freeing the calves and cowherd boys. ॥६॥लिख्यौ द्वारें नागकारौ स्याम देखि डराय । सहस फन पर निर्त कीनों सप्त ताल बजाय ॥७॥Seeing the painted figure of a serpent at the doorway, Shyam becomes afraid; yet He danced upon a thousand hoods, keeping the sevenfold rhythm. ॥७॥घोषनारी संग मोहन रच्यौ रास बनाय । कहत जननी ब्याह की तब हँसत बदन दुराय ॥८॥Mohan performed the rasa with the women of the cowherd settlement; yet when His mother speaks of His marriage, He laughs and hides His face. ॥८॥यमलार्जुन तोरि तारे हृदै प्रेम बढ़ाय । कहत तात प्रकास पल्लव देह देत दिखाय ॥१॥He uprooted the twin Arjuna trees and delivered them, filling hearts with love; yet when His father asks Him to come into view, He shyly shows His tender little form. ॥१॥वृषभ भंजन हनत केशी हन्यौ पुच्छ फिराय । डरत सखान समेत मोहन देखि ब्याई गाय ॥१०॥He destroyed the bull-demon and slew Keshi, whirling him around; yet Mohan, together with His friends, becomes frightened on seeing a cow that has just calved. ॥१०॥हरे ब्रह्मा बाल बच्छ कृत हेत दोरी माया। बच्छ ग्वाल समूह सब मिलि फिरि ब्रज रच्यौ है आय ॥११॥When Brahma carried away the boys and calves, He extended His maya for their sake; becoming all the calves and cowherd boys Himself, He once again filled Vraj with them. ॥११॥कहा कहूँ जो एक रसना बुद्धि और उपाय । सूर प्रभु हरि रसिक नागर अंगअंग नित भाय ॥१२॥What can I possibly say with only one tongue, whatever my understanding or means may be? Sur says: Prabhu Hari, the graceful rasika, is ever delightful in every limb. ॥१२॥
