चलन चाहत पायन गोपाल । लये लगाय अँगुरी नँदरानी सुंदर मूरति श्याम तमाल ॥१॥

Little Gopal is trying to walk on His own feet. Queen Yashoda holds His finger to support Him as He takes His first steps. His beautiful form is dark like the tamal tree. ॥१॥

डगमगात गिरि परत पोहोमिपर भुज भ्राजत नेंदलाल । जनु शिर पर शशि पर शशि जनु आधौमुख झुकत नलिन नमिताल ॥२॥

Little Nandalal totters and falls to the ground, His lovely arms shining as He moves. As He bends His head and face downward, He looks like a beautiful moon bending toward a lotus on its slender stalk. ॥२॥

धूरि धूसर तन नैनन अंजन चलत अटपटी चाल । जन पगधरि उपजत सगरी गति विहरत बाल मराल ॥३॥

His little body is covered with dust, and His eyes are adorned with kajal. He walks with charming, unsteady steps, like a young swan learning to move gracefully. With each little step He takes, it seems as though all the beauty of movement comes into being. ॥३॥

लट लटकत अरु चारु चखोड़ा सुठि शोभित भ्रूभाल ॥ सूरदास ऐसौ सुख देख्यौ नहीं कहा जियौ बहु काल ॥४॥

His lovely curls hang down, and His beautiful eyes, eyebrows, and forehead shine with extraordinary charm. Surdas says, “If I have not witnessed such happiness, then what was the purpose of living for so many years?” ॥४॥
