गोदबैठ गोपाल कहत व्रजराजसों ॥अहो तात एक बात श्रवण दे सुनोजो मेरी ॥Sitting in Vrajaraj’s lap, Gopal says, “O Tata, please listen carefully to one thing I have to say.भवनमांझहों गयो धरी जहां सोंज घनेरी ॥में हँस माँग्यो मायपें भोजनदेरी मोहि ॥I went inside the house, where many preparations were being made. Smiling, I asked Maiya, ‘Give Me something to eat.’कर लकुटी ले यों कह्यो यह क्यों देहों तोहि ॥१॥Taking a little stick in her hand, she said, ‘Why should I give this to You?’” ॥१॥क्षुधितजानकें नेह रोहिनी निकट बुलायो ॥दुधप्याई चुचुकार शीखदे कंठ लगायो ॥Seeing that He was hungry, Rohini lovingly called Him near, gave Him milk, coaxed Him, instructed Him, and embraced Him.यह बलि भुक्ते देवता कह्यो हरें लगकान ॥तातें रचि पचि करतहें शाक पाक पकवान ॥२॥She whispered into His ear, “These offerings are for the deity to eat; that is why everyone is carefully preparing vegetables, cooked dishes, and delicacies.” ॥२॥यह निश्चय कर कहो कोनसो देव तुम्हारो ॥जो इतनी बलि खाय काज कहा करे हमारो ॥“Then tell Me for certain: who is this deity of yours who eats so many offerings, and what does he do for us?कहा देवको नामहे कोन लोकको नाथ ॥इकलोही भोजनकरेके ले अपनों गणसाथ ॥३॥What is this deity’s name, and of which realm is he the lord? Does he eat all this alone, or does he bring his attendants with him?” ॥३॥सुनो श्याम चित लाय देवकी कहूं कहानी ॥आगम निगम पुराण कहें ऋषिवर मुनि ज्ञानी ॥“Listen attentively, Shyam, and I shall tell You about this deity. The Agamas, Vedas, and Puranas speak of him, as do wise rishis and munis.सब सुखनिधि सुर लोकहे कहीयत ताको ईश ॥सेवतहें सब देवता जाहि कोटितेंतीस ॥४॥The realm of the devas is a treasury of every happiness, and he is said to be its lord. The thirty-three crore devas serve him.” ॥४॥जाके अनुचर मेघ वरष जल धरणी पोषें ॥अन्नादिक फल फूल निपज परजा संतोषे ॥“His attendants, the clouds, shower water and nourish the earth. Grain, fruits, flowers, and other produce grow, bringing contentment to the people.बहु तृण उपजें पशुनकों भरे सरोवर तोय ॥देव दिवारी पूजिये तो व्रज अति सुख होय ॥५॥Abundant grass grows for the animals, and the lakes fill with water. If we worship this deity at Diwali, Vraj will enjoy great happiness.” ॥५॥एक बात हों कहूं बावा जो सांची मानो ॥ऐसे अनुचर कोटि कोटि कहि कहा बखानो ॥“Baba, let Me tell you one thing, if you will accept it as true. What is there to praise so greatly in one who has millions of such attendants?अश्वमेध शततें लहे इंद्रासनको भोग ॥व्रजरज कण पावे नहीं कोटि यज्ञ तप योग ॥६॥The throne of Indra may be attained through a hundred Ashvamedha yajnas, but even through millions of yajnas, austerities, and yogic practices, one cannot attain even a particle of the dust of Vraj.” ॥६॥सो प्रभु अबही चलो तुम्हें हों निकटबताऊं ॥मन भावे तब बोल आपने संगखिलाऊं ॥“Come now, and I shall show you that Prabhu nearby. If it pleases you, call Him, and I shall eat together with Him.गोवर्द्धनकी तरहटी हम वच्छ चरावन जाय ॥अखिल लोकके नाथसों छाक वांट हम खांय ॥७॥We go to the foothills of Govardhan to graze the calves, and there we share our meal with the Lord of all the worlds.” ॥७॥ब्रह्मा शिव मुनि रटें तनक पावे न वसेरो ॥काटे विघ्न अनेक सदां व्रज वासिन नेरो ॥“Brahma, Shiva, and the munis constantly seek Him, yet scarcely attain a place near Him. He removes countless obstacles and always remains close to the residents of Vraj.वेद उपनिषदमें कह्यो सो गोवर्द्धन राय ॥बडरे बैठ विचार मतोकर गोधन पूजो आय ॥८॥He whom the Vedas and Upanishads proclaim is Govardhan Rai. Let the elders sit together, consider this, and decide to worship Govardhan and the cows.” ॥८॥भये नंद मनमुदित बडे सब गोप बुलाये ॥कान्ह कहें सो करो भये सबहिन मन भाये ॥Nanda became delighted and called all the elder Gopas. “Let us do as Kanh says.” This pleased everyone’s heart.शकट पूतना आदि दे डारे विघ्न नसाय ॥गिरि प्रताप चिरकालतें थिर व्रजवास वसाय ॥९॥“He has destroyed Shakata, Putana, and other dangers. Through the glory of Giriraj, our dwelling in Vraj has remained secure for ages.” ॥९॥हरख नंद उपनंद सकल व्रज दई दुहाई ॥सुरपति पूजा मेंट राजा गोवर्द्धनराई ॥Rejoicing, Nanda and Upananda proclaimed throughout Vraj: “Set aside the worship of Surapati; King Govardhan Rai is our Lord.आदिलोक वैकुंठलों व्रज परिपूरण सोय ॥व्रजवासिन हितकारने आये हरि गिरि होय ॥१०॥He who fills even the primordial realm of Vaikuntha is fully present here in Vraj. For the welfare of the residents of Vraj, Hari has appeared in the form of the mountain.” ॥१०॥सुन व्रजवासी सकल हरख मन करी बधाई ॥कहाकरेगो इंद्र हमारो कृष्ण सहाई ॥Hearing this, all the residents of Vraj rejoiced and congratulated one another. “What can Indra do to us when Krishna is our protector?”गोपी गोसुत गायले ओर बालक संग लाय ॥गोप चले उत्साहसों पूजनकों गिरिराय ॥११॥Taking the Gopis, calves, cows, and children with them, the Gopas eagerly set out to worship Giriraj. ॥११॥अगणित शकट जुराय साज पूजाकी साजें ॥कान परी नहीं सुनत चहूँधां बाजन बाजें ॥Countless carts gathered, laden with all the preparations for worship. Instruments resounded on every side so loudly that nothing else could be heard.व्रजनारिनके यूथसों चली यशोदा माय ॥गोधन गाय मल्हावहीं उर आनंद न समाय ॥१२॥Mother Yashoda went with groups of the women of Vraj. They lovingly tended and adorned the cows, while boundless joy filled their hearts. ॥१२॥चले नंद उपनंद आदि व्रजनंद अगाऊ ॥करत परस्पर ख्याल चले मोहन बलदाऊ ॥Nanda, Upananda, and the other elders of Vraj went in front, while Mohan and Baldau walked along, playfully talking with one another.वृद्ध तरुण बारे सबे व्रज घर रहो न कोय ॥अपनो कुल पति पूजियें महा महोत्सव होय ॥१३॥Old, young, and children alike—all of Vraj went; no one remained at home. “Let us worship the Lord of our community and celebrate this great festival.” ॥१३॥दीनो दरशन शैल दूरतें शीश नवाये ॥निकट जाय प्रणाम करत अघ दूर नसाये ॥When the mountain came into view from afar, they bowed their heads. Drawing near, they offered pranam, and their sins were dispelled.दीपदान दे नंदजू रजनी मुख चहूं ओर ॥गायन कान जगायकें बूझत नंदकिशोर ॥१४॥At the beginning of night, Nandaju offered lamps all around. After awakening the cows, Nandakishor asked what should be done next. ॥१४॥आज कूहूकी राति चलो परिक्रमा कीजे ॥गिरि सन्मुख निश जाग भोर बलि पूजा दीजे ॥“Tonight is the night of Amavasya; come, let us perform parikrama. Let us remain awake through the night before Giriraj and offer worship and offerings at dawn.चले हरख गिरिराजकों सबे दाहिनों देहि ॥गोवर्द्धन गोपालकी सब गोप बलैया लेहि ॥१५॥Joyfully they proceeded with Giriraj on their right, performing parikrama. All the Gopas lovingly offered themselves to Govardhan Gopal. ॥१५॥मध्य अधिदैविक रत्न खचित गिरिराज बिराजें ॥दीपमालिका चहूँ ओर अद्भुत छबिछाजें ॥In their midst, the divine form of Giriraj shines, adorned with jewels. Deepmalika glows on every side, creating a wondrous beauty.सकल निशा आनंदमें रजनी गई विहाय ॥विधिवत् पूजा कीजियें बलि उपहार मँगाय ॥१६॥The entire night passed in joy. At dawn they began the worship according to proper rites, bringing offerings and gifts. ॥१६॥गावत गीत पुनीत सकल व्रजनारि सुहाये ॥अगणित बाजे विविध अखिल व्रजराज बजाये ॥All the lovely women of Vraj sang sacred songs, while countless kinds of instruments resounded throughout Vraj.गिरिवर प्रथम न्हवावही मानसी गंगा नीर ॥अगणित कलशा हेमके लेनावत धौरी क्षीर ॥१७॥First they bathed Girivar with the waters of Manasi Ganga. In countless golden vessels they brought the milk of Dhauri cows. ॥१७॥पुन चंदन उबटाय स्वच्छ जल गिरिहीं न्हवाये ॥अरगजा कुंकुम पोहोप चरच पटपीत उढाये ॥Then they applied sandalwood ubtan and bathed Giriraj with pure water. They anointed Him with fragrant argaja, kumkum, and flowers, and draped Him in a yellow garment.धूप दीप बहु विधिकीये कुंडवारो धरभोग ॥सुख समुद्र लहेरिन बढ़यो इन व्रजवासिन योग ॥१८॥They offered incense and lamps in many ways and placed abundant bhog before Him. For these residents of Vraj, waves rose ever higher in an ocean of happiness. ॥१८॥पूजाको प्रसाद देत ग्वालन मन भाये ॥माथें टोरा बांध पीठ थापे सरसाये ॥The Gopas were given the pleasing prasada of the worship. Festive bands were tied upon their heads, and they were affectionately patted on the back.नंदराय आज्ञा दई आंन खिलाओ गाय ॥कान्ह तोकसों यों कह्यो धौरी पेहेलें खिलाय ॥१९॥Nandarai gave the command, “Now go and play with the cows.” To Kanh he said, “You must play with Dhauri first.” ॥१९॥कान्ह गहें पट पीत आन जब बोली धौरी ॥हूंकत लेहेंडे पेलि वच्छके सन्मुख दोरी ॥Kanh took hold of His yellow cloth and called Dhauri. Calling “Hunk! Hunk!”, He guided her forward and ran with her toward her calf.छुवत वच्छ अकुलायकें डाढ मेलि समुहाय ॥भलीभली खेली कहें सब गोप श्यामकी गाय ॥२०॥Eagerly reaching her calf, she joined the herd. All the Gopas exclaimed, “How beautifully Shyam’s cow has played!” ॥२०॥खेली धूमरि गांग बुलाई काजर कारी ॥औरें अगणित झुंड सकल गोपनकी न्यारी ॥Dhumari played; then He called the herd—Kajar, Kari, and countless other distinct groups belonging to all the Gopas.सुखपयोधि लहरिन बढ्यो रह्यो सकल व्रजछाय ॥अन्नकूट विधिवत् रच्यो नाना पाक बनाय ॥२१॥The waves of the ocean of happiness increased and spread throughout Vraj. Annakut was properly arranged with many kinds of prepared foods. ॥२१॥बहुविध व्यंजन मधुर चरपरे खाटे खारे ॥वेसनके को गिने केईक सुकवनिके न्यारे ॥There were many kinds of dishes—sweet, spicy, sour, and salty. Who could count all the preparations made from besan, or the many kinds of dried delicacies?तिन मध्य पूर्यो प्रेमसों नव ओदनको कोट ॥मध्य चक्र चित्रित धर्यों गिरि ओदनकी ओट ॥२२॥In their midst, with great love, they raised a mountain of freshly cooked rice. At its centre they arranged a beautifully patterned circular display, surrounded by the mound of rice. ॥२२॥बहुत भांत पकवान नामले कोन वखानें ॥गिनत न आवे पार परम रुचि धरे संधानें ॥Who could name and describe the many kinds of delicacies? Their number had no end; everything was arranged with the greatest care and delight.वासोंधी मिश्री सनी मिलि मृगमद घनसार ॥नानाविधि मेवानके गिनत न आवे पार ॥२३॥Fragrant preparations mixed with mishri, musk, and camphor were offered, along with so many varieties of dried fruits that they could not be counted. ॥२३॥दधि सिखरन संयाव सेंमई पायस प्यारी ॥वरा मगोरी वरी तिलवरी रोचक न्यारी ॥There were curd, shikharan, sanyav, semai, and delicious payasa; vara, magori, vari, tilvari, and many other delightful preparations.पापर अति कोमलधरे घृत नवनीत मँगाय ॥ओट्यो दुध धर्यो धोरीको मिश्री पनो छनाय ॥२४॥Very delicate papars were placed there, and ghee and fresh butter were brought. Thickened milk from the Dhauri cow was offered, together with mishri and a strained sweet drink. ॥२४॥तुलसी दल दे नंद पोहोप माला पहेरावें ॥सौरभ चंदन पीत सजल शंखोदक नावें ॥Nanda offered Tulsi leaves and placed a flower garland upon Him. He offered fragrant sandalwood and bathed Him with sanctified water from a conch.दुहुंकर जोरें दीन व्है ध्यान धरत व्रजराज ॥प्रत्यक्षव्है भोजनकरें रूप धरें गिरिराज ॥२५॥With both hands folded, Vrajaraj humbly meditated upon Him. Giriraj then appeared visibly in divine form and accepted the meal. ॥२५॥कहत गोप समुझाय रूप गिरिराज निहारो ॥जाकें ऐसो पूत सुफल व्रजवास तिहारो ॥The Gopas said to one another, “Look carefully at Giriraj’s form! Blessed is your life in Vraj, Nanda, to have such a son.मोर पखौवा शिर धरे उर राजत वनमाल ॥सब देखत भोजनकरे हो मानो श्रीगोपाल ॥२६ ॥He wears a peacock feather upon His head and a vanamala shines upon His chest. Before everyone’s eyes He eats the offerings—He looks just like Shri Gopal!” ॥२६॥यथाशक्ति फल पत्र पाक ब्रजवासी लाये ॥प्रेमभक्ति प्रतिपाल परम रुचिसों वे खाये ॥According to their means, the residents of Vraj brought fruits, leaves, and prepared foods. Cherishing their loving devotion, He ate them with great delight.काहू अति संकोचते सजि धर राख्यो गेह ॥मांगमांग सबपें लियो प्रकट जनायो नेह ॥२७ ॥Some, out of great hesitation, had prepared offerings but left them at home. He asked each of them for those offerings and accepted them, openly showing His affection. ॥२७॥शीतल परम सुवास सुखद यमुनोदक लीनों ॥रह्यो जो शेष प्रसाद वांट ब्रजवासिन दीनों ॥He drank the supremely cool, fragrant, refreshing water of Yamuna. Whatever prasada remained was distributed among the residents of Vraj.बीरीदेत सँम्हारकें आपुन नंद कुमार ॥आरोगत ब्रजराज सांवरो ब्रजजन लेत उगार ॥२८ ॥Nandakumar Himself carefully offered bira. Dark-hued Brajaraj accepted it, while the people of Vraj joyfully offered themselves to Him. ॥२८॥महा महोत्सव मान लीयो गिरिराज हमारो ॥ब्रजवासिन शिरछत्र सदां गोधन रखवारो ॥“Our Giriraj has accepted this great festival—the eternal shelter over the heads of the residents of Vraj and the protector of the cows.”ब्रजरानी कर आरतो लागत गिरिके पाय ॥पटभूषण न्योंच्छावर करकें ग्वालन देत बुलाय ॥२९ ॥Brajarani performs arati and bows at Giriraj’s feet. She offers garments and ornaments and then calls the Gopas to receive them. ॥२९॥नंदादिक ब्रज गोप सबें जुर सन्मुख आये ॥नयन पाणि अरु ग्रीव शीश गिरि चरण छुवाये ॥Nanda and all the other Gopas of Vraj gathered and came before Giriraj. With their eyes, hands, necks, and heads bowed low, they touched His feet.रामकृष्णके शीशपे देव पाणि परसाय ॥आज्ञा ले घरकों चले पदवंदन करवाय ॥३० ॥The Deva placed His hand upon the heads of Ram and Krishna. Taking His permission and bowing at His feet, they set out for home. ॥३०॥इंद्र उठ्यो अकुलाय आज क्यों होत अवेरो ॥ओरवेर व्रज जाय लेहुं बलि भोग सवेरो ॥Indra became restless: “Why is there such a delay today? Go quickly to Vraj and find out about the morning offerings and bhog.”ब्रजबलिकी सुध लेंनकों दीने दूत पठाय ॥महामहोत्सव देखकें कह्यो इंद्रसों जाय ॥३१ ॥He sent messengers to learn what had happened to Vraj’s offering. Seeing the great festival there, they returned and told Indra. ॥३१॥कोप इंद्र घन जोर सबे ब्रजलोक पठाये ॥चहुं औरतें घेरघेर ब्रजबोरन आये ॥In anger, Indra sent all the mighty clouds upon Vraj. Closing in from every side, they came to submerge Vraj.मूशलधार वरखन लग्यो ब्रज कंप्यो अकुलाय ॥कह्यो सबन ब्रजराजसों अब को होय सहाय ॥३२ ॥Torrential rain began to fall, and all Vraj trembled in distress. Everyone said to Vrajaraj, “Who will help us now?” ॥३२॥व्याकुल लख ब्रजवासि कान्ह गोवर्द्धन धायों ॥वामपाणि अंगुरीन एक नख अग्र उधर्यो ॥Seeing the people of Vraj distressed, Kanh ran to Govardhan. With the tip of one finger of His left hand, He lifted the mountain.गोप लकुटिया ले रहे टेकी चहुँधां आय ॥कोमलकर अति भारतें मति इत उत डिगि जाय ॥३३ ॥The Gopas came from every side and propped up the mountain with their herding sticks, thinking, “The weight is so great upon His tender hand—may it not sway this way or that!” ॥३३॥ले कटितें कर वेणु धर्यो अधरन गिरिधारी ॥सप्तरंध्र स्वर पूर घोर ऊंचीदे भारी ॥Giridhari took the venu from His waist and placed it upon His lips, filling its seven holes with a deep and powerful melody.पर्वत दीयो उछारकें स्वरपें रह्यो ठहेराय ॥गोपनको बल देखकें फिरि गिरि थांभ्यो आय ॥३४ ॥He tossed the mountain upward, and it remained suspended upon the power of His melody. After seeing the Gopas’ strength, He again took hold of the mountain and supported it. ॥३४॥सात घोस निश परी प्रबल अति जलकी धारें ॥गिरिकी छाया सकल गोप गोधन तृणचारें ॥For seven days and nights, fierce torrents of rain continued to fall. Beneath the shelter of Giriraj, all the Gopas and cows remained safe, and the cattle grazed upon grass.बूंद न काहू परसहीं यह सुन अतुल प्रताप ॥परम पुरुष यह जानकें इंद्र बढ़्यो संताप ॥३५ ॥Not even a drop of rain touched anyone. Hearing of this incomparable power, Indra realized that He was the Supreme Purusha, and his distress increased. ॥३५॥ले सुरभी ब्रज आई पांय हरिके शिरनायो ॥तुम देवनके देव कीयो में अपनों पायो ॥Bringing Surabhi with him, Indra came to Vraj and bowed his head at Hari’s feet. “You are the Deva of the devas, yet I regarded myself as supreme.अबलोंमें जान्यों नहीं व्रज वृंदावन रूप ॥कृपा दृष्टिसों देखियें अखिल लोकके भूप ॥३६ ॥Until now I did not understand Your form here in Vraj and Vrindavan. O Lord of all the worlds, look upon me with Your gracious glance.” ॥३६॥गिरि धरधरणि कान्ह पाणि सुरपति शिरधायों ॥धेनु क्षीर अभिषेक मान अपराध निबार्यो ॥Kanh, the lifter of Giriraj and sustainer of the earth, placed His hand upon Surapati’s head. An abhishek was performed with the milk of Surabhi, and Indra’s pride and offence were removed.स्वर्ग लोकको राज दे करसों थापी पीठ ॥अबतें यह व्रतराखियो व्रजपर अमृत दीठ ॥३७ ॥Restoring him to the rule of Svargaloka, Hari lovingly placed His hand upon his back and said, “From now on, keep this vow: always look upon Vraj with a nectar-filled, gracious gaze.” ॥३७॥इंद्र पठायो गेह आप व्रज माया फेरी ॥देव विमानन आय वरख कुसुमनकी ढेरी ॥Hari sent Indra back to his abode and Himself restored Vraj to its former state. The devas came in their celestial vimanas and showered heaps of flowers.सब कोऊ गोविंदको श्रीमुख निरखत आय ॥देत दान बहु नंदजू उर आनंद न समाय ॥३८ ॥Everyone came to behold Govind’s Shri Mukh. Nandaju gave abundant gifts, while the joy within his heart knew no bounds. ॥३८॥धाय यशोमति माय लालकों कंठ लगावे ॥वार वार जलपीवे चूमकर नयन छुवावे ॥Mother Yashomati ran to Lala and clasped Him to her neck. Again and again she lovingly performed protective rites with water, kissed Him, and touched Him with her eyes.सातवरसको सांवरो सात घोस इकहाथ ॥गिरि धार्यो बलदेवके सो प्रभु वैकुंठनाथ ॥३९ ॥Only seven years old, the little dark-hued One held Giriraj upon one hand for seven days. That younger brother of Baladev is Prabhu, the Lord of Vaikuntha. ॥३९॥सब व्रजवासी लोग कहत व्रजराज दुहाई ॥जयजय शब्द उच्चार हमारो देव कन्हाई ॥All the residents of Vraj proclaimed the glory of Vrajaraj, crying aloud, “Jaya! Jaya! Kanhai is our Deva!”दे असीस घरकों चले ग्वाल गोप व्रजनारि ॥व्रजजन गिरिधर रूपपे डार्यो सर्वस्व वारि ॥४० ॥Giving their blessings, the Gwalas, Gopas, and women of Vraj returned to their homes. The people of Vraj offered everything they possessed in loving devotion to the beautiful form of Giridhar. ॥४०॥
