MEANING
जयति धन्य विठ्ठलसुवन प्रकट वल्लभ बली प्रबल पनकरि तिलक माल राखी ॥खंड पाखंड दंडी विमुख दूर कर हन्यो कलिकालतम निगम साखी ॥१॥Victory to the blessed son of Vitthal, the manifest Vallabh (Shri Gokulnathji)! Powerful and steadfast, He took a firm vow and preserved the tilak and mala. He refuted hypocrisy and false doctrines, drove away the opposing Dandis, and destroyed the darkness of Kaliyug, with the Vedas as witness. ॥१॥कपट सीपात जहांगीर वशकरि कह्यो धरत उर माल गोकुल गुसाईं ॥नहि कही शास्त्र श्रुति दोष तोहि होतहे दूरकर वेगि यह देहु दुहाई ॥२॥Through deceitful counsel, Emperor Jahangir was influenced, and he said to Gokul Gosain, “You wear a mala upon your chest.” Gokul Gosain replied, “The Shastras and Shrutis do not say that this is a fault. If it is an offence to you, then quickly send me away from here—this is my appeal to you.” ॥२॥कोप महिपाल उमराव ढिंग बोलिकें कह्यो सबदेश फरमान कीजे ॥तिलक शिर भाल ऊरमाल जो धरत हैं ताहि सब मूलतें काढ़ि दीजे ॥३॥The emperor became angry, called the nobles before him, and said, “Issue a decree throughout the land: whoever wears a tilak upon the forehead and a mala upon the chest, make them remove both completely.” ॥३॥तब सकल स्वामी दिल्लीश को कोप सुन डरपि तत्काल माला उतारी ॥नहिं कह्यो शास्त्र श्रुति वेद निज धर्म यह कह्यो श्री वल्लभ बडे बिरद धारी ॥४॥Then all the Swamis, hearing of the ruler of Delhi’s anger, became afraid and immediately removed their malas. But the great and resolute Shri Vallabh’s descendant said, “No. The Shastras, Shrutis, and Vedas declare this to be our own dharma.” ॥४॥तव जाय काश्मीर जहांगीरसों यों कह्यो माल निजधर्म सब श्रुति बतावें ॥तजें नहीं ताही हम शीश घट प्राणलों छांड यह देश कहूं ओर जावें ॥५॥Then He went to Jahangir in Kashmir and said, “All the Shrutis declare the mala to be part of our own dharma. We shall not give it up, even if our head is cut off and life itself is lost. We would rather leave this land and go somewhere else.” ॥५॥तब कह्यो शाह तुम मुलक मेरेवसो तजो निजगामके माल कंठी ॥वसे सोरम जाय सब वास गोकुल तज्यो तिलक अरु मालकों सुदृढ ग्रंथी ॥६॥Then the Shah said, “You may live within my kingdom, but leave your own village because of the mala and kanthi.” So He went and lived at Soram, leaving His residence in Gokul, while remaining firmly bound to the tilak and mala. ॥६॥सलिल कालिंदी तट गांव गोकुल निकट नाव चढि शाह एक दिवस आयो ॥कह्यो वेरान सब महल क्यों देखियत तब असफखान सब कहि सुनायो ॥७॥One day the Shah came by boat upon the waters of Kalindi, near the village of Gokul. He asked, “Why do all these residences appear deserted?” Then Asaf Khan told him the whole matter. ॥७॥गाम गोकुल गोकुलेश बसत यहां जाय अब बास सोरममें कीनो ॥मालकाढ़ी नहीं तिलक मुद्रा रही पत्र पात्शाहको मान लीनो ॥८॥“Gokulesh used to reside here in the village of Gokul, but He has now gone and made His residence at Soram. He did not remove the mala; the tilak mark also remained. He obeyed the emperor’s written order by leaving Gokul.” ॥८॥राख अपुनी कान अकबर हुमायु आन जगदगुरु प्रकट संसार चीन्हे ॥लिखो फरमान कहे शाह सन्मानकरि आय फिर बसो अपने ठिकाने ॥९॥The Shah took care to preserve his own honour and that of Akbar and Humayun, recognizing Him as a Jagadguru acknowledged throughout the world. He had a decree written and respectfully said, “Come back and live again in your own place.” ॥९॥मिले स्वामी सकल संप्रदा चारके कंध सुखपाल धरी शीश नायो ॥दई प्रभुमाल तिहिं काल सन्मान करि पेहेरि उर मुदित सब सुजस गायो ॥१०॥The Swamis of all four Sampradayas came to meet Him and showed great respect. At that time Prabhu honoured them by giving them malas; they joyfully wore them upon their chests and all sang His glorious praise. ॥१०॥धन्य गोकुलईश प्रकट जगदीश तुम कियो पन प्रबल जिन धर्म धार्यो ॥कोप महिपाल विकराल डर मेटिकें माल अविचल करी दुख निवार्यो ॥११॥Blessed are You, Gokulish, the manifest Jagadish! You made a firm vow and upheld the dharma. You removed the terrible fear of the emperor’s anger, made the wearing of the mala secure, and removed the distress. ॥११॥भयो जयकार विस्तार जस जगतमें आय फिर प्रथम गिरिधरन दरसे ॥बिरह परिताप संताप सब मिटिगयो सुखद शीतल चरन कमल परसे ॥१२॥Cries of victory arose and His fame spread throughout the world. Having returned, He first had darshan of Giridharan. All the pain and burning sorrow of separation disappeared when He touched His bliss-giving, cooling lotus feet. ॥१२॥लग्नदिन देखि शुभ आय गोकुल बसे प्रकट कीरत तिहुंलोक बाढी ॥नाथ विठ्ठल सुवन प्रकट वल्लभ भये गाय निजदासकोदास ढाढी ॥१३ ॥Choosing an auspicious day and time, He came and again resided in Gokul; His manifest fame increased throughout the three worlds. The bard, a servant of His servants, sings: “The son of Vitthal has manifested the glory of Vallabh and become our Nath.” ॥१३॥
