MEANING
राजा एक पंडित पौरि तिहारी ॥चार्यौ वेद पढ़त मुखपाटी है वामन वपुधारी ॥१॥“O King, there is a learned Brahmin at your gateway. He recites all four Vedas from memory and bears the form of Vaman.” ॥१॥अपद द्विपद पशु भाषा जानत सूरज कोटि उजारी॥नगरनमें नरनारी मोहे अवगति अलप अहारी ॥२॥“He understands the speech of creatures without feet, two-footed beings, and animals; His radiance equals millions of suns. The men and women of the city are enchanted by Him; His ways are mysterious and He eats but little.” ॥२॥सुन धुनि बलिराजा उठिधाये आहुती यज्ञ बिसारी ॥दिव्य रूप देख्यौ जु विप्रकौ कीयौ दंडौत जुहारी ॥३॥Hearing these words, King Bali rose and hurried forth, forgetting the offering at the yajna. Beholding the Brahmin’s divine form, he prostrated himself and offered his respects. ॥३॥चलिये विप्र जहाँ यज्ञवेदी बहुत करी मनुहारी ॥जो माँगौ सो दैहुँ तुरत ही हीरा रतन भंडारी ॥४॥“Come, O Brahmin, to the yajna-vedi,” Bali entreated Him earnestly. “Whatever You ask, I shall give You at once—even stores of diamonds and jewels.” ॥४॥रहो रहो राजा अधिक न कहीये दोष लगत है भारी ॥तीन पेंड़ वसुधा मोहि दीजै जहाँ रचों धर्मसारी ॥५॥“Enough, enough, O King; do not say so much, lest you incur a grave fault. Give Me only three paces of land, where I may perform my sacred duties.” ॥५॥शुक्र कहै सुनियै बलि राजा भूमिकौ दान निबारी ॥यह तौ विप्र न होय आपुही आये छलन मुरारी ॥६॥Shukra says, “Listen, King Bali, refrain from giving this land. This is no Brahmin—it is Murari Himself, who has come to beguile you.” ॥६॥कीजै कहा जगतगुरु याचैं आपुन भये भिखारी ॥लै उदक संकल्प जो कीनौ वामन देह पसारी ॥७॥Bali says, “What else should I do when the Guru of the world Himself asks of me, having become a beggar?” Taking water in his hand, he made his solemn vow, and Vaman expanded His form. ॥७॥जयजयकार भयौ भूमापत द्वय पेंड भई सारी ॥एक पेंड तुम देहु तुरत ही के बचनन सतहारी ॥८॥Cries of “Jaya! Jaya!” arose; with two strides, the Lord encompassed the whole earth. “Now give Me at once the place for My remaining one step, if you would remain true to your word.” ॥८॥सत नहीं छांडौ सतगुरु मेरे नापौ पीठ हमारी ॥सूरदास प्रभु सर्वस्व दीनौ पायौ राज पतारी ॥९॥“I shall not abandon truth, O my true Guru; measure Your final step upon my back.” Surdas says: having given everything to the Lord, Bali attained sovereignty over Patala. ॥९॥
