सुमिरौ नंदराज कुमार। नंदआँगन करत रिंगन बदन बिथुरे बार ॥१॥

Remember the beloved son of Nanda Maharaj. He crawls about in Nanda’s courtyard, with His lovely curls scattered across His face. ॥१॥

Anklets adorn His little feet, tiny bells jingle around His waist, and a necklace with a protective amulet graces His neck. Bracelets adorn His wrists, a tiger-claw ornament rests upon His chest, and a beautiful tilak shines on His forehead. ॥२॥

सुनत फिरके चकृत चित निज किंकिनी झनकार। ठठकि टेरत करत निश्चै हँसत परम उदार ॥३॥

Hearing the jingling of His own little bells, He turns around in surprise, wondering where the sound is coming from. He suddenly stops, calls out, and tries to discover its source, then laughs with great delight. ॥३॥

पंक लेपन अंग कीने नचत नैन सुढार । करि बड़ाई गोद जननी लेत मोद अपार ॥४॥

His little body is smeared with mud, and His beautiful eyes move playfully. His mother praises Him lovingly and takes Him into her lap, feeling boundless joy. ॥४॥

He catches hold of a calf’s tail and playfully pulls it. His beauty surpasses even that of Kamadeva, the god of love. Seeing Him, the gopis are overcome with affection, laughing in delight and losing all awareness of themselves. ॥५॥

क्रूरके ढिंग जात खेलन फिरत जननी लार । काज बिसरत सबै गृहके विग्रता के भार ॥६॥

He goes off to play, even approaching those who might be rough with Him, while His mother follows closely behind. In her concern and affection for Him, she forgets all her household duties and responsibilities. ॥६॥

He generously shares the stolen butter with His cowherd companions. When someone tries to catch or punish Him for His mischief, the little child quickly runs away. ॥९॥

Near His mother, He appears so innocent and well-behaved, delighting the hearts of gentle people. Meanwhile, the gopis gather together in groups of two, ten, four, and more, coming to complain about His mischief. ॥१०॥

Remembering the playful signs and gestures He had made to them, the gopis laugh and pretend to quarrel with Him. Beholding the beautiful, playful Lord, they lovingly offer themselves to Him again and again. ॥११॥
